I know all this and more

I left the house for this afternoon's doctor to discover that the mail had already brought my contributor's copy of Not One of Us #87, containing my poem "Gramarye." It owes a title to Susan Cooper and the rest to anger and the sea. It belongs to the talent issue, sharing double edges with the fiction and poetry of Joseph Hirsch, Marissa Lingen, J. Hellend, David Kopaska-Merkel and more. I love the alert, alien camera contributed to the cover art by John and Flo Stanton. Pick up a copy, add to the weirdness. Its digest-sized persistence is a gift.

I love the idea of adding Glasgow to Boston's roster of sister cities, or Boston to Glasgow's. I keep forgetting we're not officially twinned with Halifax.

WERS played Aretha Franklin's "Eleanor Rigby" (1971) as I was driving from [personal profile] a_reasonable_man's to my mother's. I may have been given a new motto. It is fine that the tornado watch seems to have expired in a very brief monsoon.

June 18 - Share a small piece of trivia

You all spoiled me with tales of your critters. Thank you all.

Today, I am inviting you all to share a small piece of trivia. Any subject, just a little something you learned and retained.

The band Filter's lead singer is the brother of the T2 Terminator's actor. (Richard and Robert Patrick, respectively.)

I think the dangers were told and the hardships numbered, pretty much

On Tuesday- i.e. the trains were not cancelled and did not suddenly come to a halt short of the desired destination with an announcement that we all had to disembark and get the next one, even if the actual journey was a bit long and dreary and subject to Potemkin Wifi, which claims that there is Rail Company's wifi but won't actually connect.

So I arrived with a slight amount of time in hand, during which I had hoped to grab some light snack to sustain me. Unfortunately although, once I had attained to the high street-ish area, there were several cute little cafe/bakery places, they had all closed extremely early in the afternoon (la, the provinces!) and I was obliged to resort to a wrap from the Subway more or less bang opposite my destination and consume it in the carpark, where I had been informed organisers would be turning up.

However, I had managed to transmit my Powerpoint and they had managed to load it and it was all working, and that was okay, even if I'd have preferred a bit more in the line of a podium to balance my script on.

Oh, and I was talking adjacent to the actual antique and rather manky condoms (in a display case) which were found in the local archives.

Think it went quite well - there were questions afterwards even if my response to several of them was 'er, it's All More Complicated', and further interrogations over the subsequent tea and biscuits.

No ghostly presences were encountered, but it was still daylight when I emerged to catch my train back to Marylebone.

Have submitted my invoice and been informed that it is now In the System.

(I did include an image of Sid on my first slide.)

Community Recs Post!

Every Thursday, we have a community post, just like this one, where you can drop a rec or five in the comments.

This works great if you only have one rec and don't want to make a whole post for it, or if you don't have a DW account, or if you're shy. ;)

(But don't forget: you can deffo make posts of your own seven days a week. ;D!)

So what cool other kinds of fanworks/fanart/fics/fanvids/fancrafts/podfics have we discovered this week? Drop it in the comments below. Anon comment is enabled.

BTW, AI fanworks are not eligible for reccing at recthething. If you aware that a fanwork is AI-generated, please do not rec it here.

3 Things: Collages, Questions, and Backrooms

1. Collages, old and new

I have some new collages to share here! One is actually a gift from [personal profile] stonepicnicking_okapi which I absolutely love, the others are mine, inspired by What We do in the Shadows (TV), Priums, the Alien prequel films, and general sapphic love ^^ (There’s some artistic nudity under the cut, if anyone would appreciate the warning!)

Thanks for reading, friends. What was the last film you saw at the cinema? 👀

Icebreaker Week: Day 4

  1. Suggest ways that the podficcer(s) might be involved in the writing process that would work well for you.

  2. Suggest ways that the writer(s) might be involved in the podficcing process that would work well for you.

  3. If one or more group members become unhappy or uncomfortable with how the collaboration is going, what are your preferences for how it would be handled? (For example, a preference that your partner(s) tell you right away if something bothers them, a preference that they give you some time after telling you something heavy for you to process and respond, etc. Please note that for any conflict that cannot be resolved within a single conversation, we STRONGLY ENCOURAGE coming to the mods for support and not allowing things to escalate! Participants should also all feel welcome and encouraged to come straight to the mods without having talked to their partner first if that feels safer/better!)

  4. What is the maximum project length that works for you? Is there a period of time where your partner will not be able to contact you for many days? Is there anything else along these lines that you want to let your partner know about in advance?

I don't want this city without you

My plans for the day went over sideways, but in the evening [personal profile] spatch treated me to barbecue from Blue Ribbon and we watched the after-sunset reflecting in Spy Pond. This weekend my father who has spent a lifetime not caring about sports cheered for the Knicks and I remain, like just about everyone, thrilled by Cape Verde's no-goal draw to Spain. I have made a cucumber soup for the first summer in years and put up my hair to take a bath for the first time in my life. Apparently this afternoon there was a flash mob for Irn-Bru on Boston Common. Widow's Bay (2026) stuck the landing.

June 17 - Other animals you have lived with

So I have been exposed to living with:

~ Hamsters (did not go well)
~ Gerbils (MUCH better, I was breeding them and trading the litters for food and bedding)
~ Turtles (most of these were a few days at most, just 'moving rocks' I found and brought to my yard until the moved on. We did have a snapper, found on a railroad track at about a silver dollar size. Raised him to salad plate size before I took him to be rewilded)
~ Fish (some mine, most my wife's)

Never kept snakes, but often played with wild ones. Only had birds as a small!Asp, a pair of 'keets named Silly and Loudmouth. Frequently wound up with bold squirrels that were quick to importune for snacks when I ate outside. A polite raccoon once took up residence near my yard, and would actually leave our trash alone as I kept the food scraps separate for him.

There was the skunk at my battalion that hated strangers, but never once ran from us that lived there or sprayed at us. We didn't feed him, but treated him as a mascot and pest deterrent (the two-legged strange men type).

We have also "babysat" fawns, several years running, as our yard became a preferred nursery with the does. And this year we of course had the litter of foxes.

Wednesday Reading Meme for June 17 2026

This is a week not without stress! The in-laws are visiting (slightly soccer related reasons) and it’s a lot.

What I’ve Read

There’s a Fire in Me – suzukiblu - https://archiveofourown.org/works/19040134 An Avatar fic where Earth freedom fighter Jet is revealed to have been secretly a Firebender. There’s trauma, there’s worldbuilding, there’s Zuko trying to be a teacher to someone other than Aang – it’s great and a very good read for a stressed out brain.

Mortifying Ordeal by Windsoftime - https://archiveofourown.org/works/58454809 - This a soulmate AU of a fandom I have never read in, Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint. The gist is a character believes that his soulmate has rejected him but, in fact, his connection is lopsided – he’s receiving visions of his soulmate’s life (the norm) but his soulmate isn’t getting anything from him at all. I had a fun time – it’s a solid romance novel plot that I would happily read again. I do think that a different version of this fic would have more wallowing in the main character’s feelings of unworthiness, fear of being seen, but honestly, this is a very cohesive light fiction and I think it was fun.

What I’m Reading
Omniscience Reader’s Viewpoint – Vol 1 – I figured that the time had come and I might as well read a long ass web novel. It’s pretty fun – I have received some spoilers but none of them make a lick of sense, so I’m just here for the ride and to learn some tropes I’d never heard of before. (Happily, my partner has read enough manga/manhwa that I can get an explanation of certain tropes on tap, which the book does not see fit to actually provide.)

The Raven Scholar – 75% - It’s a bit odd how this book is structured so that bit events have happened precisely the 50% and 75% marks.

Shroud – Adrian Tchaikovsky – Dark and interesting and weird. I usually like his work so I’m going to continue on ahead.

What I’ll Read Next

VICTORY (after a fashion) IS MINE

So. Last week I wound up taking a minor head injury )

; I am fine, and while my glasses got knocked off my face they, too, seemed fine. So I shrugged and carried on! and wound up with nary a bruise.

... and then this morning I picked my glasses up from my bedside table and the relevant arm detached from the body of the frame in such a fashion that I had to get A to come and rescue me by using Eyes to Find Things.

Today has thus involved a whole lot of wearing sunglasses; a visit to Specsavers, who took one look at it and said "you need to buy a whole new pair of frames :)"; some fucking about with electrical tape (unsatisfactory); some fucking about with trying to move an arm from my previous pair of spectacles (prescription NOT compatible with the current state of my eyes) to the newer pair (only to discover the hinges were extremely not compatible); and, finally, remembering I'd brought a pile of unclaimed glasses home from the field to donate/recycle. The first pair I selected were no good (hinge anatomy incompatible); the SECOND pair look silly but! I am comfortably! wearing! my untinted lenses!!! so that will do for at least as long as it takes Specsavers to respond to my grumpy e-mail, following which I shall angrily buy replacements from people who are not them, maybe.

(It has also involved A Trip To The Gym, where I went waaaaay down in weight after a week of pushing my body very hard in a field... sufficient to massively cut my between-set rests, which is extremely welcome! Legs much tireder than arms, unsurprisingly; feels like I'm probably gonna be sore tomorrow, second protein shake notwithstanding; really looking forward to next squat session, and mildly impatient that I gotta get through next deadlift day first...)
