Oh boy, I get to talk about Rex Talbot, my love and only canon queer character in the series (so, naturally, he dies ;__; I do not recommend watching the show just for him, because he’s in exactly one (1) episode and dies offscreen in it.)

1. How I feel about this character
All the feelings! I love him so much, because he’s so sad and I just want him to be happy and alive. He’s up there with Foyle as my top favorite characters from this show. He’s so tragic, which means I just want to write him as happy in all ways.

2. All the people I ship romantically and/or sexually with this character
Both the Foyles. Andrew because that’s who Rex is canonically in love with, and Christopher because this fic made me ship it hard. https://archiveofourown.org/works/187357

3. Favorite gen relationship(s) for this character
Papa Foyle, mostly, although somehow I think Rex and Sam would get along by way of Andrew (possibly by lovingly teasing him mercilessly).

4. My unpopular opinion about this character
More unpopular opinion about the author, but Horowitz, who create the show, and I believe wrote that episode, never does right by queer characters, so boo!

5. One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.
That somehow he’d survived and came back as a POW in the final days of the war to reconnect with Andrew.

6. Random pet theory about this character that you won't convince me is not true.
Literature. So, Andrew’s focus in uni was maths but I will go down fighting for Rex to have his focus in literature, especially focused on male relationships (friendships, forbidden romances, etc.) as he basically figured himself out.

7. A song or piece of music I associate with this character.
Rough Boys by Pete Townshend is my go to Rex/Andrew song, and I even have a playlist for them that I should really add to on Spotify (it’s currently on Amazon Music, but, like, I don’t know how to share from there).

Oh gosh, I don’t know if I can do hard mode, it’s been a minute since I last read the manga with him. So, I’ll do Yugi!

1. How I feel about this character
Yugi is a little ball of sunshine and friendship, with a little bit of perv mixed in. I love him very much, and I loved seeing how he grew throughout the manga up through DSoD.

2. All the people I ship romantically and/or sexually with this character
Kaiba, but specifically an older, slightly more mellow Kaiba. Yami Yugi/Atem, for sure (although I’m old school and still think of them as two separate entities). Also, Bakura, my little nerd bb.

3. Favorite gen relationship(s) for this character
Kaiba, again. Jounouchi, because they’re like best buds.

4. My unpopular opinion about this character
Do I have any? Idk. I really like season 0/early manga Yugi. Is that unpopular?

5. One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.
I wish we’d get another full manga of after Yami, but I guess that’s what we have fanfic for.

6. Random pet theory about this character that you won't convince me is not true.
OK, so, you know how in the American translation there’s a scene during Death-T when Jounouchi asks if Yugi needs his insulin? Diabetic Yugi is my jam and my jelly. I don’t care for all the people who say it’s “translator error”, we need more characters with chronic health issues, dangit!

7. A song or piece of music I associate with this character.
Um, is it bad that the song is The Best Day Ever from the gd Spongebob soundtrack? I saw an AMV with it once and it just stuck.

I also ship Yugi with Kaiba, Yami/Atem (they are two different characters, fight me, fandom) and Ryou as well~

I think liking season 0/early manga Yugi is more rare than unpopular. A lot of fans (myself included) are only familiar with the DM anime version of him. I keep meaning to watch season 0, maybe I should do it while I'm off work...

Anime needs more characters with chronic health issues in general, tbh. I'm struggling to think of main characters with any (Main from Ascendance of a Bookworm, maybe?), and the only side character I can recall is someone from Naruto who has a chronic cough (who ends up dead for unrelated reasons).

I'd be curious to see if manga!Shadi and DM!Shadi have characterization differences.

Aw yeah, multiships!

Yeah, once I got back into YGO in high school, I went and bought the entire manga series starting from the original arc and w o w it's different in tone from the DM anime. But it's also pretty fun, too.

I think manga!Shadi and DM!Shadi are pretty similar, but there is a trial for Yugi's other self that manga!Shadi puts him through, and it's wild! He nearly kills Anzu. It's a trip.
