I actually had a few unexpected joys last year, but only one of them fandom-based.

Non-fandom joys:  I was able to get a surgery I've been wanting since I was 16.  I got a new day job which meant I could leave my old super stressful, extremely toxic day job.

Fandom joy:  While I was recovering from surgery, I joined a brand new fandom Discord server.  Within about a month, some Things Occurred, which split a handful of us into a group chat of "GIRL (gender neutral), DID YOU SEE THAT???" and our little subset has been going strong since.

Comics are a sprawling, convoluted, constantly-rebooted mess of timelines, continuities, and creative teams.  That said, I do want to give another shoutout to the short-lived Grayson series by Tom King and Tim Seeley.  It was fun, it was new, it was exciting!  It fell off a cliff when they pulled the original team three fucking issues from finishing it but I'm not still bitter about that, hahaha, noooooo, not me! but damn, we had a good run while it lasted.  Despite having some of the worst fucking haters (which I'm bitter about on record, just fyi) for no good reason (truly, Grayson came out at the beginning of fandom pissing on the poor), we had a very small but spirited love.

Talking about how fandom has improved my life must include the ways in which fandom has also been a struggle in my life.  (Why must it?  Because my thoughts about the good things are intimately tied up with the bad things.)

In an attempt to keep this relatively brief, I'm only counting fandom from my college days on (about 13 years ago to present).

In my last couple of years at college, I joined a DC Comics roleplaying group on Tumblr.  I had, at this point, already made a couple of friends through tumblr, but it was during my time in this group that I really started posting my own fanfics online and getting very involved in the then-current Batfandom on Tumblr.  (Fun Fact:  My first ever smut writing experience was a threesome in a live chat/real-time RP with two other people.  This was the event that convinced me I could, in fact, write and post my own smut.  If I could do it live, I could certainly do it on my own time!)  I was on Tumblr for the New 52 event.  I was there for the entire run on Grayson, including the unnecessary (and, lbr, pretty damn racist) hatred towards the rebooted version of Helena Bertinelli and the absolute bullshit that was the aggressively loud Grayson-haters' Twitter harassment of Tim Seeley while he was on a dateSome of y'all fuckers need to learn some manners, I stg.

During this time, I went to several comic conventions (WonderCon and Long Beach Comic Con being the biggest two).  I met some local artists and creators.  I actually got to not only get some Grayson comics signed by Tom King for me and a friend, but also got to talk to him about the comic for a good chunk of time.  (My favorite story:  During the issue where Dick walks through the desert with the baby, there are two pages where he tells the story of a dream he had, which is actually the 1963 Batman story Robin Dies At Dawn.  The art in Grayson is of Dick walking through the bottom third of the pages while the sun beats down on the upper two-thirds.  Tom King had originally wanted the upper parts of the panel to be drawings from the Robin Dies At Dawn story as a nice reference/Easter Egg.  Editorial said no, so they stuck with the sun.)

I wrote a ton of fanfics between 2013-2018!  I did so many fandom events and big bangs!  I made some fandom friends who I still consider very dear friends!

And I also saw a lot of fandom explode at others and implode on itself.

Right around 2019, I got my first job outside home.  I still wrote a lot, but a lot of my fandom friends were either going into new fandoms or moving to different sites, especially after the 2018 Tumblr porn ban.  By 2020, I was starting to get back into fandom in a very light-touch way, but so many of us were gone.  I did end up writing my biggest/most involved fanfic in years during that year (a graveyard shift job as a COVID symptom checker where I only had to pay attention at the top of each hour helped immensely, ngl).  But, oof, there was a lot going on that I no longer wanted to be part of in fandom.

In 2021, I wound up back at the same company I worked for in 2019 (this time as a permanent employee) and my stress levels tripled.  I started to get back into fandom as a way to stay sane, and it worked, for the most part!  I was still doing too many exchanges and events (which ended up only adding to the stress, unfortunately), but I was getting back into that kind of fandom friendship space that I genuinely had missed.  I even ended up going back on Tumblr!

And then, in 2024, after an incredibly brutal end to 2023, I found a Discord group that seemed to have that old-school fandom feeling to it.  During my three months off work post-surgery, I not only joined that group, but found a subgroup of new friends within it (and we've been going strong since).

I feel like a lot of this post seems more negative, but it's not really meant to be.  I have made some great friends through fandom.  I've written some honestly fantastic things because of fandom.  I've also learned a lot about myself through fandom, about what stresses I can take, about what kinds of things I like to write and read, even about how to take care of myself and when I need to remove myself from the more toxic and/or anger-inducing aspects of fandom.

And yet, unfortunately, brevity is clearly not one of the things I've learned via fandom.

...every bird has them.

I don't know if this is so much a fandom opinion as much as a fandom practice, but if my [redacted] years online have taught me anything, it's that I really do not have the energy to spend gleefully hating on things.  Even if it sucks.  Even if it's factually wrong.  If it's in any way within my control to avoid seeing a terrible hot take or avoid a fandom, I'll do it.  So long as no one's being hurt where it's within my power to help, I just do not have the spoons.

That does not mean I won't ever go into a group chat and have a good laugh at such things.  I ain't perfect.  But there is a certain level of ire and rage that I just no longer have the energy to expend by engaging with the willfully obtuse.

That said, I also no longer have the patience to be nice about certain behaviors.  You don't get to come uninvited into my house and then complain about the decorations.  It's my house.

I think I vaguely remember signing up for this last year, or maybe it was this past year, but, uh, clearly that never got done.

Am I going to remember to do it this year?  Who knows!  I will try, though!

You know, I was trying to think of what kinds of things I like and would like recommendations or gifts of and, for a while, I couldn't think of anything.  I was a little stuck because I know I'm picky particular about things I like in terms of reading and art and such.  But then I thought, what if I expanded my ideas of what fandom-related things there are out there, and suddenly, I had ideas.

I am feeling very called to music and its intersection with fandom right now.  But also, since I basically live within the floating timeline of DC Comics, I'm also super interested in any canon recs for various parts of canon that maybe aren't or haven't been as well-known as others.

Recommendations Wishlist:
  • Soundtracks (movies, shows, comics, etc.);  I'm a big fan of, like, Prince's Batman album, or the Batman Forever soundtrack, or the musical It's A Bird It's A Plane It's Superman! for example
  • Concept albums/Story Songs (Thick as a Brick, The Wall, Tommy, etc.);  Love me some concept albums, things that tell a story over an entire record or song are so my jam
  • Unique comic events (miniseries, AU/Elseworlds, Imaginary Stories, etc.); Doesn't even have to be strictly DC Comics related, though that's always my first love; I've been getting very much into indie comics and experimental comics
  • Comic-inspired/media tie-in novels/novelizations (DC's Inheritance, Last Sons, Final Crisis, No Man's Land, etc.); I cannot get enough of comic stories in novel/prose form
  • Comic Histories/Philosophies/General Academic-type nonfiction (The Caped Crusade, Soul of the Dark Knight, Is Superman Circumcised?, etc.)

Honestly, I'm just in such a mood for odd and unique fandom things, anything would be super cool!

I have quite a few goals for this year, but I'll just list my main fannish ones:
  • Write only things I enjoy
  • Finish my posted WIPs
  • Do my writing classes this year

(No, you didn't miss one; I'm only doing them sporadically.)

First off, can I say that I'm not thrilled with omegaverse, AND YET, I have now written so much of it.  I think about it all the time.  Although, whenever I do write it, I typically try to subvert some things from it.

Anyway, I always say I don't know what my favorite things are, aside from like, slice of life, humor, found family, etc.  And then there's kinks....

Let's just say, I have too many to count by now.

The List:
1. A favorite character
2. Something that makes you laugh
3. A bookshelf
4. A game or hobby you enjoy
5. Something you find comforting
6. A TV show or movie you hope more people will watch
7. A piece of clothing you love
8. A thing from an old fandom
9. A thing from a new fandom

I can answer all 9 in basically three photos (except maybe the game, but the hobby I enjoy is writing, so I think it counts).

In this first photo, I have a favorite character (Dick Grayson as Nightwing in his first costume a.k.a. Discowing); something that makes me laugh (HIM, because his evil joyous smile makes me smile); my bookshelf (well, a corner of one); something I find comforting (the smell of white musk); and things from old and new fandoms (HIM and Discowing, again).
A photo of part of a bookshelf on which sits a perfume bottle of White Musk, a Funk Pop of Dick Grayson as Nightwing in his first costume, and a Funko Soda figure of HIM from Powerpuff Girls.

In this second photo, I have another bookshelf and my little magnetic Vodka Mutini plush, because, yes, I am Homestuck trash (oh, and there is a game here! Blacksad for the Nintendo Switch (which I haven't played yet, but still).):
A photo of another part of a bookcase with books, a magnetic plush of Vodka Mutini from Homestuck, along with a blurry image of Blacksad the game.

This last photo is of some new jewelry I have:  A ring!  Which I love, because I've always loved rings so much, and my new writing bracelet of calligraphy jasper (a.k.a. elephant jasper, among other names):
A photo of a pale hand showing off a silver ring with a blue stone and a bracelet of calligraphy jasper beads (also known as elephant jasper).

Ah, the things I wish canon would add.  Like making Dick Grayson canonically queer!  Like letting Tim and Kon make out be queer and alive at the same time (and also make out, why not)!

TBH, I think my strongest canon change would be that every superhero is queer to some degree.  I mean, come on, they run around in tights around muscle-people all day.  They're an all-night Pride parade, dammit!

DC, LET ME HAVE THIS!!!!
fleetsparrow: Drawing of Bear in a Batman costume, in her identity Bat-Bear. (Default)
Oh man, I have a lot to scream about re: fandom.  I could start with the pervasive and permissive racism that goes on in here, unchecked and unchallenged.  I could go with the fact that apparently reading comprehension is for losers and that nuance is deader than the proverbial doorknob.  I could go on with the strange pro vs. anti wars that are going on now, far, far worse than the wank of days gone by.

But honestly?  I think I'm just going to scream.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
fleetsparrow: Drawing of Bear in a Batman costume, in her identity Bat-Bear. (Default)
I'm not gonna lie, DC is (much like Marvel), a nightmare to jump into.  They're constantly resetting their own universes, having multi-title crossovers, and generally fucking up their own canon for so-called excitement.

My advice:  You wanna do the DC?  You start with wikis.  Comic panels and wikis are great places to learn the history of comics and characters.

"But Fleet!  I want to read current comics and get into things NOW, and also I hate happiness and good things in life."

Yeah, yeah, I hear ya.

Start with the all-ages comics.

Don't you roll your eyes at me!  I know you're a big person now, but hear me out:

All-ages comics are fun.  They're funny.  They're goofy, but they also have a lot of heart and great interpersonal dynamics.

Read Batman Knightwatch.  Read the Batman & Scooby-Doo team ups.  Read the graphic novels (word on this:  definitely start with trades if you want to get the history and backstory of any currently running comic, too.  It's cheaper in the long run and they're all RIGHT THERE for you to read).  Read Batman: Wayne Family Adventures on Webtoons.  There's really good stuff out there if you want it.

And, if you're so desperate for broken people doing fucked up things to each other and not talking about dick until it's too late, by all means, jump into the newest Batman issue or whatever.

But don't say I didn't warn you.
fleetsparrow: Drawing of Bear in a Batman costume, in her identity Bat-Bear. (Default)
Hello all!

So, for my Fannish Fifty, I'm going to be doing 50 fanfics of my favorite characters.  They'll all probably be similar, but who cares?  It makes me happy!

Let's see if I can actually do it.
fleetsparrow: Drawing of Bear in a Batman costume, in her identity Bat-Bear. (Default)
Hello, all, I'm back!...ish.

These questions are courtesy of kindkit!

 1) You can successfully lure everyone you like into one single fandom, e.g. one comics title, one movie, one trilogy telling a single story, etc. What fandom do you choose?
Oh boy, this is a loaded question.  OK, so, of course, nothing is perfect and general caveats, but I think I'd have to go with The Darkside Detective.

Because DC breaks my heart, Yu-Gi-Oh has too many parts, but Darkside Detective is great.

NO WAIT, MAYBE MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000!

Wait, no.....

;___;

2) DW vs. Twitter as a site for fannish interaction?
Ooh, another tough one.  I think Dreamwidth is better for long-form fan interaction and event stuff, but I do like Twitter's more... laid back style of posting random thoughts and then disappearing into the ether like some kind of shitposting Ghost of Fandom Past.  Maybe it's because I don't do a lot of meta or such, I do mostly like shower thoughts type posts (thanks, ADHD, for limiting my brainpower to tweet-size comments!).  But for interaction, I think Dreamwidth does do it a little better, because it's easier to curate who finds you and who you follow.

Of course, I think Tumblr actually was the true heir to both, as it allowed random thoughts AND longform posts.  However, I wouldn't go back to that hellsite if you paid me now, so I guess this is where I live now.

3) You have to eat only one national/regional cuisine for an entire month. What do you pick? (Assume suitable accommodations for allergies, dietary needs, etc. will be offered.)
Just because I'm doing Italian this quarter on Duolingo, I'm gonna have to go with Italian food.  All the carbs.  All the meats.  All the sauces.  (and none of the olive oil because I'm fucKING ALLERGIC, THANKS DAD).  But yes, there are accommodations and I'm eating more fettucine than is possibly healthy for one human being.  I'm in carb heaven.

4) Do you think there's other sapient life in the universe somewhere? (Not a question about UFOs or alien visitors, just whether you think it exists.)
I think so.  I'd say I hope so, but I'm sure there is, because, like, the arrogance of us to think we're not only the highest pinnacle of intelligence but that we can't see it, therefore it doesn't exist is amazing!

Besides, if there isn't, it's an awful waste of space.

5) Are you a re-reader, and if so, what are your favorite books to re-read?
You know, I really don't re-read often, mostly because I'm always trying to get to new books, but--

As soon as I typed that, I realized that I've re-read the Sherlock Holmes stories, like, a dozen or more times in my life and am about to do them again, so there it is, that's my answer.  Mysteries are my comfort reads.
